What is meant by 'reactive'?
Strong drive to give up electrons and form ions

What does a metal more reactive than hydrogen do to it?
Displaces it

What happens during thermal decomposition to carbonates, nitrates and hydroxides?
Carbonate = CO2 + oxide, nitrate = oxide + NO2 + oxygen, hydroxide = oxide + water

Talk about the Thermite process.
Used to repair tram and rail lines. Powdered aluminium and iron oxide are placed in a container and lit. Iron is reduced. It runs into cracks and hardens.

How to make a simple cell?
The difference in reactivity causes a redox reaction. Two different metals are placed in an electrolyte. Electrons flow from a more reactive metal, so it is called the negative pole. The further apart in reactivity the higher the voltage.

Describe the sacrificial protection of iron.
Iron rusts to form an oxide. To prevent that from happening a more reactive metals such as zinc is placed. Zinc will be oxidised instead of iron.

Describe galvanising
Another way zinc protects iron. This basically means coating with zinc by electrolysis, which keeps air and moisture away. Even if the coating is damaged sacrificial protection will occur. Used for car bodies and roofing

Why doesn't aluminium corrode?
It protects itself by reacting with oxygen to form a coat of aluminium oxide which makes it unreactive
