Chemistry tests to know

?
How to test for ammonium ions?
Add NaOH and gently heat. Hold your litmus paper over, and it should turn from red to blue
1 of 13
carbonate ions
Add HCl, then limewater. CO2 will be produced, limewater turns cloudy
2 of 13
sulfate ions
HCl + Barium Chloride. White precipitate of Barium Sulfate is produced
3 of 13
Testing for Halides
Add nitric acid + silver nitrate. You will produce a white, or creamy or yellow precipitate
4 of 13
Further Tests for halides
Dilute Ammonia, Conc Ammonia, Conc Ammonia - Dissolves, Dossolves, No change

Solid Chloride
Conc H2SO4 - steamy fumes of HCl
6 of 13
Solid Bromide
Conc H2SO4 - production of steamy fumes of HBr and brown Br2
7 of 13
Solid Iodide
Conc H2SO4 - production of steamy fumes of HI, H2S (rotten egg smell)
8 of 13
Testing for an Alkene
Bromine Water (turns colourless)
9 of 13
Testing for an Aldehyde
Fehling's Solution ( Blue to red precipitate) or Tollen's (silver mirror formed)
