Chemistry - testing for gasses

?
Why are gasses hard to test?
most are colourless and odorless
1 of 12
How can we test for hydrogen?
place gas in a test tube and ignite a splint, bringing it close to the gas. If it makes a 'pop' sound, hydrogen is presnt
2 of 12
How do we test for oxygen?
Do the same but with a splint that's been put out. If oxygen is present, it will reignite
3 of 12
You can test for carbon dioxide using l___ (bubble gas through this and it'll turn cloudy if it's CO2)
limewater (aqueous calcium hydroxide solution)
4 of 12
acid and metal carbonate are placed in one test tube, connected to a test tube with __ in
limewater
5 of 12
first the acid will react with the carbonate to produce...
carbon dioxide
6 of 12
this travels through the tube connecting the test tubes. The limewater, if the gas is carbon dioxide, will....
turn cloudy
7 of 12
How can we test for chlorine?
test tube filled with chlorine sample. hold damp litmus paper over it and over time, chlorine would bleach the paper (make it white)
8 of 12
___ bleaches litmus paper
chlorine
9 of 12
___ reacts with a lit splint with a pop sound
Hydrogen
10 of 12
_____ turns limewater cloudy
Carbon dioxide
11 of 12
___ reignites a glowing (already been lit + put out) splint
Oxygen
