What is matter?
Matter is everything around you and is anything that has a mass and takes up space.
1 of 21
What are the 3 main states of matter?
Solids + Liquids + Gasses
2 of 21
What is an element?
An element is one of a class of substances.
3 of 21
What is a compound?
A compound is a molecule made of atoms from different elements.
4 of 21
What is a molecule?
A molecule is the smallest particle in a chemical element or compound.
5 of 21
What is a mixture?
A mixture is a material system made up of two or more different substances which are mixed.
6 of 21
What are 2 examples of compounds?
Salt = Sodium Chloride + Baking Soda = Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate
7 of 21
What is the Law of Conservation of Mass?
A law that states that matter can be changed from one form into another, mixtures can be separated or made, and pure substances can be decomposed, but the total amount of mass remains constant.
8 of 21
What is combustion?
A chemical process in which a substance reacts rapidly with oxygen and gives off heat.
9 of 21
What is corrosion?
A chemical process which converts refined metal to their more stable oxide. It is the gradual destruction of materials.
10 of 21
What is precipitation?
Any product of the condensation of atmospheric water vapour that falls under gravity.
11 of 21
What is Neutralisation?
A chemical reaction in which an acid and a base react with each other.
12 of 21
What is decomposition?
The process by which organic substances are broken down into a much simpler form of matter.
13 of 21
What is respiration?
A chemical reaction that happens in all living cells and is the way that energy is released from glucose.
14 of 21
What is Aerobic Respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen --> Carbon Dioxide + Water
15 of 21
What is Anaerobic Respiration?
During handwork, not enough oxygen can reach your muscle cells so aerobic is replaced by anaerobic. Glucose --> Lactic Acid
16 of 21
What are 2 examples of chemical reaction word equations?
1. Hydrochloric acid + Sodium Hydroxide --> Sodium Chloride + Water 2. Magnesium + Hydrochloric acid --> Magnesium chloride + Hydrogen
17 of 21
What is an exothermic reaction? What are 3 examples?
A reaction that transfers energy to the surroundings. 1. Burning 2. Neutralisation reactions 3. The reaction between water and calcium chloride
18 of 21
What is an endothermic reaction? What are 3 examples?
A reaction that take sin energy from the surroundings. 1. Electrolysis 2. The reaction between ethnic acid and sodium chloride 3. The thermal decomposition of calcium chloride in a blast furnace.
19 of 21
As the temperature is increased, what happens to the rate of chemical reactions?
Speeds up
20 of 21
What is a catalyst?
a substance which speeds up a reaction, but is chemically unchanged at the end of the reaction.
