Atoms?
The smallest part of an element that can exist.
1 of 16
Elements?
A substance made up of only one type of atom.
2 of 16
Molecule?
A particle made of 2 or more atoms bonded together. These atoms can be the same or different elements.
3 of 16
Compound?
These contain two or more atoms chemically joined together
4 of 16
Mixture?
Different types of molecules/elements but not chemically joined together.
5 of 16
Filtration?
Is used to separate solids from liquids. An insoluble solid can't pass through the filtration paper, liquids and dissolved solids can.
6 of 16
Crystallisation?
Is used to separate soluble solids from liquids solvents. The mixture is heated until the crystals start to form, then it is left to cool and let the solvent to evaporate.
7 of 16
Chromatography?
Is used to separate soluble dyes and colouring from one another. As the water moves up the paper the most soluble dyes move up the paper faster that the others.
8 of 16
Proton?
Relative mass: 1 /Charge:+1
9 of 16
Neutron?
Relative mass: 1/ Charge: 0
10 of 16
Electron?
Relative mass:0.0005/Charge:-1
11 of 16
top number, bottom number=
top= relative atomic mass, bottom=Atomic number
12 of 16
Ions?
Is an atom that has gained or lost electrons. As they have more or fewer electrons than protons the charges do not cancel each other out and ions have an overall charge.
13 of 16
negative=
has more electrons than protons.
14 of 16
positive=
has fewer electrons that protons.
15 of 16
Isotope?
is an atom of the same element with different numbers of neutrons.
