What are the percentages of the different gases in the atmosphere?
78% Nitrogen, 21% oxygen, Nearly 1% argon and 0.04% carbon dioxide
1 of 17
What can iron determine?
Iron can determine the percentage of oxygen that is in the air. Iron reacts with the oxygen to form iron oxide to form rust. The iron will remove to oxygen from the air.
2 of 17
What experiments can you do to find out how much oxygen is in the air?
The Iron Wool Experiment - The Phosphorus Experiment
3 of 17
What is the equation to calculate the percentage of oxygen?
The equation is Start Volume-Final Volume/Start Volume *100
4 of 17
What do you soak the iron wool in?
Acetic Acid
5 of 17
What is formed when an element is reacted with oxygen?
An Oxide, They can have either acidic or basic character.
6 of 17
What happens when Magnesium reacts with oxygen?
Magnesium reacts with a white flame, it forms magnesiumoxide which is a white powder, it is slightly alkaline when dissolved in water.
7 of 17
What happens when Hydrogen reacts with oxygen?
It burns with a yellow/orange flame, the only product is water (as water vapour), thecombustion of hydrogen can be tested by the 'Squeaky Pop'.
8 of 17
WHat happens when Sulfur reacts with oxygen?
It burns with a pale blue flame creating sulfur dioxide, it is acidic when dissolved in water.
9 of 17
What do you get when you burn a metal carbonate?
This makes carbon dioxide and a metal oxide. This is know as thermal decomposition, which is when a substance is broken down to a simpler substance.
10 of 17
What is the balance of the temperature on Earth?
The temperature is a balanced amont of heat entering the earth and the amount of heat it radiates back out into space.
11 of 17
What are the main 'greenhouse gases'?
The main greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour. They act like an insulating layer.
12 of 17
What affects the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?
Deforestation - the fewer the trees, the less carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere through photosynthesis and Burning Fossil Fuels- Carbon that was 'locked up' is being released as carbon dioxide.
13 of 17
What has happened in the last 200 years?
Human activity has increased the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This is happeneing because there is more carbon dioxide being released faster into the atmosphere than its being removed.
14 of 17
Climate change is linked to increasing carbon dioxide?
There is a correlation between increasing levels of carbon dioxide and the gradual heating up of the earths atmosphere ( global warming). The extra carbon dioxide has caused the average temperature of the Earth to increase.
15 of 17
What does climate change cause?
This causes flooding due to polar ice caps melting and the sea level will rise. This wall cause many animals, (e.g. polar bears), from drowning due to no ice to float on.
16 of 17
What can climate change cause?
It can cause other types of climate chages, such a change in the rainfall patterns.
