what does the atomic number tell you?
how many protons there are
1 of 10
what does the mass number tell you?
the total numberof protons and neutrons
2 of 10
what is a compund?
when 2 or more elements are chemically combined
3 of 10
what is an isotope?
different atomic forms of the same element which has the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons.
4 of 10
what is ionic bonding?
when atoms gain or lose electrons
5 of 10
what are the properties of an ionic compound?
high melting and boiling point due tothe strong attraction between the ions, when molten or dissovled in water electrons are free to move so can carry electricity.
6 of 10
whats covalent bonding?
when an atom shares electrons
7 of 10
what are the properties of simple molecular substances?
the forces between molecules are weak meaning melting and boiling point is low, mostly gas or liquid at room temperature, dont conduct electricity-no ions
8 of 10
what are the properties of giant covalent structures?
they are macromolecules, all atoms are bonded by strong covalent bonds meaning they have a very high melting and boiling point, dont conduct electricity
9 of 10
what are metallic structures?
consist of a giant structre, good conductors of heat and electricity because electrons are freeto move through the whole structure, electrons hold the atoms together in a regular structure-allows layers of atoms to slide over eachother-bent&shaped
