What is salt?
A salt is a compound formed when some or all of the hydrogen in an acid is replaced by a metal (or by an ammonium ion). For example, potassium nitrate, KNO_(3) (from nitric acid).

What is saturated hydrocarbon?
Describes a hydrocarbon that contains as many hydrogen atoms as possible in each molecule.

What is scale (limescale)?
Th insoluble substance formed when temporary hard water is boiled.

What is scum?
Th precipitate formed when soap reacts with calcium and/or magnesium ions in hard water.

What is shape memory alloy?
Mixture of metals which respond to changes in temperature.

What is a shell (or energy level)?
An area in an atom, around its nucleus, where the electrons are found.

What is a smart polymer?
Polymers that change in response to changes in their environment.

Heating a metal ore in order to extract its metal.

A cleaning agent that does not produce a scum when used with hard water.

What is soft water?
Water containing no dissolved calcium and/or magnesium salts, so it easily forms a lather with soap.

What is stainless steel?
A chromium-nickel alloy of steel which does not rust.

What is state symbol?
The abbreviations used in balanced symbol equations to show if reactants and products are solid (s), liquid (l), gas (g) or dissolved in water (aq).

An alloy of iron with small amounts of carbon or other metals, such as nickel and chromium, added.

Acids that ionise completely in aqueous solutions.
