What is calcium hydroxide?
A white solid made by reacting calcium oxide with water. It is used as a cheap alkali in industry.
2 of 17
What is calcium oxide?
A white solid made by heating limestone strongly, for example, in a lime kiln.
3 of 17
What is carbon monoxide?
A toxic gas whose formula is CO.
4 of 17
What is cast iron?
The impure iron taken directly from a blast furnace.
5 of 17
What is a catalyst?
A substance that speeds up a chemical reaction. At the end of the reaction the catalyst remains chemically unchanged.

Collision theory is...?
An explanation of chemical reactions in terms of reacting particles colliding with sufficient energy for a reaction to take place.
9 of 17
What is a compound?
A substance made when two or more elements are chemically bonded together. For example, water H_(2)O is a compound made from hydrogen and oxygen.

Rock that contains a high proportion of a copper compound.
13 of 17
The core is...?
The centre of the Earth.
14 of 17
What is covalent bonding?
The attraction between two atoms that share one or more pairs of electrons.
15 of 17
What is cracking?
The reaction used in the oil industry to break down large hydrocarbons into smaller, more useful ones. This occurs when the hydrocarbon vapour is either passed over a hot catalyst or mixed with steam and heated to a high temperature.
