CHEMISTRY - Halogens

?
What group are halogens in and what are they?
Halogens are non-metals and are in group 7
1 of 13
Name the first 4 halogens as you go down the group
Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine
2 of 13
Fluorine - colour, state and how reactive it is
Fluorine is a very reactive, poisonous yellow gas
3 of 13
Chlorine - colour, state and how reactive it is
Chlorine is a fairly reactive, poisonous, dense green gas
4 of 13
Bromine - colour, state and how reactive it is
Bromine is a dense, poisonous, red-brown volatile liquid
5 of 13
Iodine - colour and sate(s) of matter
Iodine is a dark grey crystalline solid or a purple vapour
6 of 13
what happens to the reactivity as you go down the group? and why?
the reactivity as you go down the group DECREASES. This is because its its harder to gain an extra electron because as you go down the group the outer shell is further away from the nucleus
7 of 13
what happens to the melting and boiling point as you go down the group?
the melting and boiling point INCREASES as you go down the group
8 of 13
Give the definition of a displacement reaction
A displacement reaction can occur between a more reactive halogen and the salt of a less reactive one
9 of 13
what do all halogens have in common?
they all have 7 electrons in their outer shell, they all form ionic bonds with metals and they can form mollecular compounds with non metals
10 of 13
what other halogens can chlorine displace?
chlorine can displace bromine and iodine from an aqueous solution of it's salt (bromide or iodide)
11 of 13
what do halogens form with metals?
Ionic bonds. The halogens form 1-ions called halides. The compounds that form have ionic structures
12 of 13
what can halogens form with non-metals? give an example
Halogens can share electrons via covalent bonding with other non-metals. The compounds that form have simple mollecular structures. e.g HCL, PCL, HF
