?
What is an element?
A substance made up of only one type of atom e.g. Hydrogen
1 of 17
What is a mixture?
When 2 or more elements are not chemically joined
2 of 17
What is a compound?
When two or more elements are chemically joined.
3 of 17
How much of the air is made up of nitrogen?
70%
4 of 17
How much of the air is made up of oxygen?
21%
5 of 17
What is the overall charge of an atom?
Neutral
6 of 17
What charge do protons have?
Positive
7 of 17
What charge do neutrons have?
Negative
8 of 17
What charge do electrons have?
Negative
9 of 17
What are the three parts to fractional distillation?
Boiling, evaporating and condensing
10 of 17
What does miscible mean?
Describes liquids that dissolve each other, mixing completely. They don't form separate layers that are seen in mixture of immiscible liquids that have settled.
11 of 17
What is chromatography?
A technique to separate and identify substances from mixtures in solutions of different compounds.
12 of 17
Why do we use pencil instead of pen for the chromatography line?
Ink is soluble and its components will break down whereas the graphite in pencil will not.
13 of 17
What makes up an atom?
Inside is the heaviest part named the nucleus. Inside the nucleus are two sub-atomic particles called protons and neutrons. Outside the nucleus, spinning around in orbits, are electrons.
14 of 17
How do you work out how many protons are in an atom?
The atomic number determines how many protons there are.
15 of 17
How do you work out how many electrons there are?
The atomic number, showing the protons, is the same as the number of electrons.
16 of 17
How do you work out how many neutrons there are?
The mass number (big number) - the atomic number (smaller number)
