CHEMISTRY - electrolysis

?
what is the basic definition for electrolysis?
Electrolysis is splitting up compounds using electricity - separating them so they are purer

give the two electrodes and state if they are positive or negative
Anode- positive electrode. Cathode- negative electrode
3 of 13
what ions will go to the anode? are they reduced or oxidised?
negative ions will go towards the positive anode- (group 6/7). here they LOSE electrons and are OXIDISED to the element
4 of 13
what ions will got to the cathode? are they reduced or oxidised?
positive ions will go towards the negative cathode (group 1/2). they GAIN electrons and are REDUCED to the element

A student carries out electrolysis on molten sodium chloride. What is produced at a) the anode? b) the cathode?
a) at the anode chlorine is produced (group 7). b) sodium is produced (group 1)

What is electrolysis of aqueous solution?
Aqueous solution is water. In electrolysis of aqueous solution you also have to factor in the ions in the water. These are hydrogen (H+) and hydroxide (OH-)
7 of 13
during electrolysis of an aqueous solution, what happens at the cathode?
At the cathode if H+ ions and metal ions (G1/2) are present HYDROGEN GAS will be produced - this is if the metal is MORE REACTIVE than hydrogen (e.g sodium). If it is LESS REACTIVE a solid layer of the PURE METAL (e.g copper) will be produced at the

during electrolysis of an aqueous solution, what happens at the anode?
At the anode, if OH- and HALIDE IONS (G7) (Cl-, Br-, I-) are present, molecules of either CHLORINE, BROMINE or IODINE will be produced. if NO HALIDES are present then the OH- ions are discharged and OXYGEN will be formed
9 of 13
once electrolysis of an aqueous solution has finished how can you work out if chlorine was produced?
the chlorine would have bleached the litmus paper and so the litmus paper would have turned white
10 of 13
" how can you test for hydrogen?
hydrogen makes a 'squeaky pop' with a lighted splint
11 of 13
" how can you test for oxygen?
Oxygen can relight a glowing splint

What do half equations of electrolysis show?
half equations show the reactions at the electrodes and what is produced
