Chemistry - Chemical Bonds

?
What are the three types of bonding?
Covalent, Ionic and Metallic
1 of 11
When does covalent bonding occur and what are the particles like?
Between non-metals and in most non-metallic elements. Atoms that share pairs of electrons.
2 of 11
When does ionic bonding occur and what are the particles like?
Between a metal and non-metals. Oppositely charged ions.
3 of 11
When does metallic bonding occur and what are the particles like?
Between metals and alloys. Atoms that share delocalised electrons.
4 of 11
Describe the process of ionic bonding.
When metals and non-metals transfer electrons, there atoms become charged (ions). The positively charged metal ions and negatively charged non-metal ions attract and bond by electrostatic attraction.
5 of 11
Describe the process of covalent bonding.
Non-metals share their electrons.
6 of 11
Describe the process of metallic bonding
The metals form positively charged ions which are attracted to the negatively charge delocalised electrons.
7 of 11
Give the properties of ionic bonds.
often crystals. High boiling points. Solid at room temperature and can conduct electricity when melted or in a solution.
8 of 11
Give the properties of covalent bonds.
Molecules. Gas or liquid at room temperature. Low boiling point. Does not conduct electricity.
9 of 11
Give the properties of metallic bonds.
In lumps or sheets of metal. Good conductors of electricity. High melting point. Solid at room temperature (except for mercury)
10 of 11
Why can't covalent bonds conduct electricity?
They have no free electrons or ions
