Chemistry Chapter 10

?
Equation for Rate of Reaction
Change in concentration/ Time Units: (mol dm-3 s-1)
1 of 16
How would you monitor the rate of reaction?
Monitor the change in concentration of the reactants or products.
2 of 16
How would you monitor the rate of a reaction that forms a gas?
Monitor the volume of gas produced at regular time intervals.
3 of 16
What is the effect of a catalyst and how does it impact rate of reaction?
The catalyst provides an alternative reaction pathway of lower activation energy. Therefore less energy is needed for reactants to collide succesfully, therefore more particles can react, so the rate of reaction increases.
4 of 16
What is a homogeneous catalyst?
A catalyst with the same physical state of the reactants.
5 of 16
Define the features of a Boltzmann disribution graph.
Energy on X-axis, number of molecules on Y-axis. Activation energy labelled on X-axis.
6 of 16
What are the features of molecules on a Boltzmann graph?
None have zero energy (graph starts at origin). Area under curve is equal to the total number of molecules. No maximum energy
7 of 16
Describe the effect of an increase in temperature on a Boltzmann graph.
Lower peak shifted to right, more molecules exceed the activation energy.
8 of 16
Describe the effect of a catalyst on a Boltzmann graph.
No change in shape but lower activation energy.
9 of 16
Define dynamic equilibrium.
The rate of the forwards and backwards reactions or equal and the concentrations of reactants and products do not change.
10 of 16
Define a closed system.
A closed system is isolated from its surroundings (Temperature, pressure and concentrations of reactants and products are unaffected by outside influences.)
11 of 16
What is le Chatelier's principle?
When a system in equilibrium is subjected to an external change the system opposes the change to minimise the effect of that change.
12 of 16
Explain the impact on a reaction if the equilibrium shifts.
(Right= More products formed) Left= More reactants formed)
13 of 16
Explain the impact of an increase in temperature on a closed system in equilibrium.
The equilibrium shifts to favour the endothermic reaction (more reactants made)
14 of 16
Explain the effect of an increase in pressure on a closed system in equilibrium
The system opposes the change by shifting to favour the side with fewer moles.
15 of 16
Explain why a catalyst has no impact on the position of equilibrium.
A catalyst increases the rate of the forwards and backwards reaction equally, so there in no change in the position of equilibrium.
