What properties do the transition elements have in comparison to the alkali metals?
They have much higher melting points and densities, they are also stronger and harder but they are much less reactive.

It is given by the Roman numeral in its name, for example, iron (II) chloride contains Fe^(2+) ions and so its formula is FeCl_2 and iron (III) chrloride contains Fe^(3+) ions and its formula is FeCl_3.

Between Groups 2 and 3.

They are all metals and so are sometimes called the transition metals.

They are all malleable and ductile and they are good conductors of heat and electricity, they react only slowly or not at all with oxygen and water at ordinary temperatures and most are strong, dense and useful as building materials, often as alloys.
