Chemistry C2 5.2 Making salts from metals or bases

?
What happens when an acid reacts with a base?
A neutralisation reaction takes place and produces a salt and water.
1 of 20
What can be made by the reaction of a metal with an acid?
Some salts, this reaction produces hydrogen gas as well as a salt.
2 of 20
How can salts be crystallised from solutions?
By evaporating off water.
3 of 20
What metals will acids react with?
Metals that are above hydrogen in the reactivity series.
4 of 20
What happens when acids react with very reactive metals?
The reactions of acids with very reactive metals, such as sodium and potassium, are too violent to be done safely.
5 of 20
What do metals produce when they react with acids?
A salt and hydrogen gas.
6 of 20
What is the word equation for an acid reacting with a metal?
Acid + metal → a salt + hydrogen.
7 of 20
What is the symbol equation for an acid reacting with a metal?
H_2SO_4(aq) + Zn(s) → ZnSO_4(aq) + H_2(g)
8 of 20
What are metal oxides and metal hydroxides?
Bases.

What happens when an acid reacts with a base?
A neutralisation reaction takes place and a salt and water are produced.

What is the word equation of when an acid reacts with a base?
Acid + base → a salt + water.
11 of 20
What is the symbol equation for when an acid reacts with a base?
2HCl(aq) + MgO(s) → MgCl_2(aq) + H_2O(l)
12 of 20
What can a neutralisation reaction be used for?
To make salts.
13 of 20
How is a neutralisation reaction used to make a salt?
A metal, or base insoluble in water, is gradually added to the acid until all of the acid has reacted; the mixture is filtered to remove excess solid reactant leaving a solution of the salt; the water is evaporated so the salt crystallises.
14 of 20
How are chlorides, nitrates and sulfates made?
Chlorides are made from hydrochloric acid, nitrates from nitric acid and sulphites from sulphuric acid.
15 of 20
What metals other than zinc can safely react with an acid to produce a salt?
Any metal that is more reactive than hydrogen but less reactive than calcium, e.g. lead, tin, iron, aluminium, magnesium.
16 of 20
Why do we add excess of the base when making a salt?
To use up all of the acid/to neutralise all of the acid.
17 of 20
What products are formed when nitric acid reacts with magnesium?
Magnesium nitrate and hydrogen.
18 of 20
What products are formed when hydrochloric acid reacts with copper hydroxide?
Copper chloride and water.

**LEARN THE FORMULAE OF THE THREE IMPORTANT ACIDS HCl,HNO_3 AND H_2SO_4 TO HELP YOU WRITE THE FORMULAE OF THEIR SALTS**
**REMEMBER THAT WHEN THEY FORM SALTS HYDROGEN IS LOST FROM THE ACID SO THEY FORM CHLORIDES, NITRATES AND SULFATES**
