What are the properties of ionic compounds?
They have: high melting points; solids at room temperature.

Because they have giant structures in which many strong electrostatic forces hold the ions together.

Because they are giant structures in which many strong electrostatic forces hold the ions together and a lot of energy is needed to overcome the ionic bonds to melt the solids.

What happens to the ions when an ionic compound has been melted?
The ions are free to move and this allows them to carry electrical charge, so the liquids conduct electricity.

Why do some ionic solids dissolve in water?
Because water molecules can split up the lattice of some ionic solids, the ions are then free to move in the solutions and also conduct electricity.

Why can ionic compounds conduct electricity when solid?
Because th ions can only vibrate about fixed positions, they cannot move around, therefore the compound must be melted or dissolved in water for the ions to be able to move about freely.
