Chemistry C1 6.1 Extracting vegetable oils.

?
Where do vegetable oils come from?
They can be extracted from seeds, nuts and fruits.
1 of 16
What do vegetable oils provide?
When eaten vegetable oils provide us with important nutrients and a lot of energy, they are important foods.
2 of 16
What can vegetable oils be used for?
To make biofuels such as biodiesel. They release a lot of energy when they burn in air and so can be used as fuels.
3 of 16
What do the molecules of unsaturated oils contain?
Carbon-carbon double bonds (C=C).
4 of 16
What effect do unsaturated oils have on bromine water?
They decolourise it.
5 of 16
How can vegetable oils be extracted from seeds, nuts and fruits?
By crushing and pressing the plant material, followed by removing water and other impurities. Some oils are extracted by distilling the plant material mixed with water, this produces a mixture of oil and water from which the oil can be separated.

What do vegetable oils provide us with when eaten?
A lot of energy and important nutrients.
7 of 16
What do vegetable oils release when they burn in air?
A lot of energy.
8 of 16
What makes vegetable oils suitable as fuel?
They release a lot of energy when they burn in air.
9 of 16
What do the molecules in vegetable oils have?
Hydrocarbon chains.
10 of 16
What bonds do the molecules in unsaturated vegetable oils have?
Carbon-carbon double bondes (C=C).
11 of 16
If there are several double bonds in each molecule of vegetable oil, what is this called?
Polyunsaturated.
12 of 16
How do unsaturated oils react with bromine water?
They turn it from orange to colourless.
13 of 16
What two methods are used to extract vegetable oils?
Crushing and pressing, and distillation with water/steam.
14 of 16
Why are vegetable oils important foods?
They provide energy and nutrients.
15 of 16
Why are some vegetable oils described as unsaturated?
Their molecules have carbon-carbon double bonds.
