Chemistry C1 5.5 Ethanol

HideShow resource information
How can ethanol be made?
By fermenting sugar from plants using enzymes in yeast; or by hydration of ethene with steam in the presence of a catalyst.
1 of 12
What is needed to use ethene to make ethanol?
Non-renewable crude oil whereas fermentation uses renewable plant material.
2 of 12
What is the formula of ethanol?
C_(2)H_(6)O, although it is also often written as C_(2)H_(5)OH.
3 of 12
Why is the formula of ethanol often shown with OH at the end?
This shows the OH group in the molecule and that means it is an alcohol.
4 of 12
Why is yeast used in fermentation to produce ethanol from sugar in plants?
Enzymes in the yeast cause the sugar to convert to ethanol and carbon dioxide. This method is used to make alcoholic drinks.
5 of 12
What is the process by which ethene is used to produce ethanol?
Ethene is reacted with steam at a high temperature in the presence of a catalyst.
6 of 12
Where does the ethene used to produce ethanol come from?
The ethene is obtained from crude oil by cracking.
7 of 12
What is the process by which sugar from plants is used to produce ethanol?
Fermentation is done at room temperature, but can only be produce a dilute aqueous solution of ethanol. Therefore the ethanol must be separated from the solution by fractional distillation to give pure ethanol.
8 of 12
What is the disadvantage of ethanol produced from ethene?
Uses non-renewable resource (crude oil), although the reaction can be run continuously and produces pure ethanol it requires a high temperature.
9 of 12
Wha is a word equation for the fermentation of sugar using yeast?
Sugar/glucose (arrow symbol) ethanol + carbon dioxide.
10 of 12
What is a word equation for the hydration of ethene?
Ethene + steam (arrow symbol) ethanol.

**YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO DESCRIBE THE TWO WAYS OF MAKING ETHANOL AND WRITE BALANCED EQUATIONS FOR THE REACTIONS**
