Chemistry C1 5.2 Making polymers from alkenes.

?
What are plastics made from?
Very large molecules called polymers.
1 of 15
What are polymers?
Large molecules made when many small molecules (monomers) join together.
2 of 15
What can be used to make polymers such as poly(ethene) and poly(propene)?
Alkenes.
3 of 15
What happens to the bonds when a polymer is formed?
Double bonds in the monomer become single bonds in the polymer when the molecules have joined.
4 of 15
What are the small molecules used to make polymers called?
Monomers.
5 of 15
What is the reaction to make a polymer called?
Polymerisation.
6 of 15
What can lots of ethene (C_(2)H_(4)) join together to form?
Poly(ethene), commonly called polythene.
7 of 15
What happens in the polymerisation reaction of ethene?
Each ethene molecule becomes a single bond and thousands of ethene molecules join together in long chains.
8 of 15
What happens to the bonds in the monomer when a polymer is formed?
Double bonds in the monomer become single bonds in the polymer when the molecules have jointed together.
9 of 15
How do other alkenes polymerise in relation to ethene?
Other alkenes can polymerise in a similar way, for example, propene (C_(3)H_(6)) can form poly(propene).
10 of 15
What are made from alkenes?
Many of the plastics we use as bags, bottles, containers and toys.
11 of 15
How are polymers made?
From many small molecules or monomers that react or join together or polymerise to make very large or very long molecule.
12 of 15
How many monomers are there in a poly(ethene) molecule?
Thousands or a very large number.
13 of 15
Why can we make polymers from alkenes but not from alkanes?
Alkenes are more reactive or are unsaturated or have a double bond, alkanes are unreactive or saturated or do not have a double bond.
