Chemistry C1 4.5 Alternative fuels.

HideShow resource information
What can biodiesel be made from?
Vegetable oils extracted from plants.
1 of 14
What are biofuels?
A renewable source of energy that could be used instead of fossil fuels.
2 of 14
What is ethanol?
A biofuel that is made from sugar.
3 of 14
What is a potential fuel for the future?
Hydrogen.
4 of 14
What are biofuels made from?
Plant or animal products.
5 of 14
What are the advantages to using biodiesel?
It makes little contribution to carbon dioxide levels because the carbon dioxide that is given off when it burns was taken from the atmosphere by plants as they grew.
6 of 14
What are the disadvantages to using biodiesel?
The plants that are grown for biodiesel use large areas of farmland.
7 of 14
What form does ethanol come in and what are the advantages of this?
It is a liquid and so can be stored and distributed like other liquid fuels, it can also be mixed with petrol.
8 of 14
What advantage does using hydrogen have?
It only produces water when burned.
9 of 14
What disadvantage does using hydrogen have?
It is a gas so takes up a large volume which makes it difficult to store in the quantities needed for combustion in engines.
10 of 14
How can hydrogen be produced and what is the disadvantage to this?
From water by electrolysis but this requires large amounts of energy.
11 of 14
Name two biofuels...
Biodiesel, ethanol.
12 of 14
What are the advantages and disadvantages of hydrogen as a fuel?
Advantages: no pollution; only product is water; can be made from water. Disadvantages: difficult to store; production requires large amounts of energy.
