Chemistry C1 4.1 Fuels from crude oil.

HideShow resource information
What is crude oil?
It is a mixture of many different compounds.
1 of 16
What can be used to separate mixtures of liquid?
Distillation.
2 of 16
What are most of the compounds in crude oil?
Hydrocarbons, they contain only hydrogen and carbon.
3 of 16
What are alkanes?
Saturated hydrocarbons.
4 of 16
How many hydrogen atoms do alkanes contain?
As many hydrogen atoms as possible in their molecules.
5 of 16
What is the boiling point of a substance?
The temperature at which its liquid boils when it is heated, when its gas is cooled it condenses at the same temperature.
6 of 16
Why does crude oil need to be separated to make useful fuels?
Because crude oil contains many different compounds that boil at different temperatures, these burn under different conditions and so need to be separated to be useful.
7 of 16
What can simple distillation of crude oil produce?
Liquids that boil within different temperature ranges.
8 of 16
What are the liquids that boil within different temperature ranges during the simple distillation of crude oil called?
Fractions.
9 of 16
What are many of the hydrocarbons in crude oil?
Alkanes.
10 of 16
What is the general formula for alkanes?
C_(n)H_(2n+2).
11 of 16
Why do we call alkanes saturated hydrocarbons?
Because they contain as many hydrogen atoms as possible in each molecule.
12 of 16
How can we show how the atoms are bonded together?
We can represent molecules using a displayed formula.
13 of 16
What are fractions?
Liquids with different boiling ranges separated from a mixture of liquids (crude oil).
14 of 16
How can you tell that the substance with the formula C_(5)H_(12) is an alkane?
It has the general formula C_(n)H(2n+2). It is a saturated compound, it has only single carbon-carbon bonds.
15 of 16
What is the molecular formula of butane?
C(4)H(10).
