Chemistry C1 3.5 Useful metals

?
What are elements from the central block of the periodic table known as?
The transition metals.
1 of 16
Why are transition metals particularly useful?
Transition metals have properties that make them useful for building and making things.
2 of 16
What are most of the metals we use?
Alloys.
3 of 16
What do all the transition metals have in common?
They are all metals and have similar properties (good conductors of heat and electricity).
4 of 16
What properties do many of the transition metals have which make them useful as materials for buildings, vehicles, containers, pipes and wires?
Many of them are strong, but can be bent or hammered into shape.
5 of 16
What properties does copper have which makes it ideal to use for wiring and pipes?
Copper is a very good conductor of heat and does not react with water. It can be bent but is hard enough to keep its shape and it is a good conductor of electricity.
6 of 16
Are most of the metals we use pure elements?
No.
7 of 16
Why aren't most of the metals we use pure elements?
Pure iron, copper, gold and aluminium are soft and easily bent, therefore they are often mixed with other elements to make alloys that are harder so that they keep their shape.
8 of 16
What is iron made into?
Steels.
9 of 16
What is gold used for jewellery usually?
An alloy.
10 of 16
Wha is aluminium alloy usually used for?
Buildings and aircraft.
11 of 16
What are the names of two copper alloys?
Bronze and brass.
12 of 16
What properties make transition metals useful materials for making things?
Strong conductors of heat and electricity, can be bent and hammered into shape.
13 of 16
What properties are needed for electrical wiring?
Good conductor of electricity, can be made into wires, can be bent into shape, resistant to corrosion.
14 of 16
Why is the gold used for wedding rings missed with other metals?
To make it harder.

***MANY STUDENTS LIST COST AS A PROPERTY - THIS IS NOT A 'PROPERTY' SO DONT GET CONFUSED*******
