The atoms in the reactants re-arrange themselves to form new substances, the products.

What happens to the number and type of atoms in a chemical reaction?
Atoms are neither created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction, therefore the number and type of atoms remains the same before and after the reaction (mass of products = mass of reactants)..

How do word equations and symbol equations differ?
Word equations only give the names oaf the reactants and products. Symbol equations show the numbers and types of atoms in the reactants and products.

What should symbol equations always be?
Balanced.

What is meant by balanced in relation to symbol equations?
The numbers of each type of atom should be the same on both sides of a symbol equation.

How are symbol equations balanced?
The large numbers in front of the formulae of the reactants and products are changed. Only th large numbers should be changed and never the small numbers.

Why should the small (subscript) numbers never be changed when balancing equations?
This changes the formula of the substance.

In the formulae in symbol equations, what do the small (subscript) numbers multiply?
Only the atom they follow.

What atoms are in H_(2)SO_(4)?
Two atoms of hydrogen, one atom of sulfur and four atoms of oxygen.

One magnesium ion and two nitrate ions = one atom of magnesium, 1x2 atoms of nitrogen and 3x2=6 atoms of oxygen.
