what is the smallest part of an element that can exist?
an atom
1 of 12
what is an element?
a substance that contains only one sort of atom
2 of 12
what is a compound?
a compound is something that contains two or more atoms chemically combined in fixed proportions
3 of 12
what is a mixture?
somethings that consists of two or more elements or compounds which are not chemically combined
4 of 12
what is filtration?
filtration is used to separate soluble solids from insoluble solids, e.g. a mixture of salt (soluble) and sand (insoluble) can be separated by dissolving the salt in water and then filtering the mixture
5 of 12
what is crystallisation?
crystallisation is used to obtain a soluble solid from a solution, e.g salt crystals can be obtained from a solution of salty water: 1. gently warm mixture 2. the water evaporates and leaves crystals of pure salt
6 of 12
what is fractional distillation?
this is used when you have two mixtures in which the components have different boiling points, e.g. oxygen and nitrogen can be obtained from liquid air by fractional distillation because they have different boiling points.
7 of 12
what is chromatography?
chromatography is used to separate the different soluble coloured components of a mixture, e.g. the different colours added to a fizzy drink can be separated using chromatography
8 of 12
what is the chemical formula?
the chemical formula is the combo of numbers and chemical symbols.
9 of 12
what do scientists use the chemical formula for?
scientists use the chemical formula to show the different elements of a compound and how many atoms of each element one molecule of the compound contains
10 of 12
what is simple distillation?
this is used to obtain a solvent from a solution
11 of 12
how much do the products of a chemical reaction weigh?
the total mass of the products of a chemical reaction is always equal to the total mass of the reactants. this is because no atoms are lost or made.
