What is a displacement reaction?
A displacement reaction is when a more reactive element displaces a less reactive element from its compound.
1 of 25
Recall the metals in the reactivity series from least reactive upward.
Cu, Fe, Zn, Al, Mg, Ca, Na, K.
2 of 25
Describe how copper reacts when it is heated in air.
Will form a black layer of copper oxide but that does not require heat.
3 of 25
Describe how iron reacts when heated in air.
Iron sheets do not burn easily but iron wool or filling will burn with white sparks forming a black solid.
4 of 25
Describe how zinc reacts when heated in air.,
Burns leaving a yellow solid which cools then
turns white
5 of 25
Describe how aluminium reacts when heated in air.
Sheets do not burn easily but powdered aluminium burns with white sparks leaving a white solid
6 of 25
Describe how magnesium reacts when heated in air.
Burns with a bright white light flame leaving a white/grey ash
7 of 25
Describe how sodium, calcium and potassium reacts when heated in air.
Ca ) Burns with a brick red flame, Na ) Burns with a yellow / orange flame, K ) Burns with a lilac flame.
8 of 25
Describe how Copper, Iron, Zinc and Aluminium reacts with water.
No reaction except Iron rusting in a couple of days
9 of 25
Describe how magnesium reacts with water.
Little amount of bubble with occur in 7 days.
10 of 25
Describe how calcium reacts with water.
Ca granules initially sink then continually rise to the top then sink in turn bubbles will be made and the beaker will feel warm to the touch. Then a grey gritty powdery solid will form in the water.
11 of 25
Describe how Sodium reacts with water.
Floats on top of water moving rapidly spontaneously. Lots of heat is given off so the metal melts into a molten ball. Can burn with a yellow flame with a colourless solution forming.
12 of 25
Describe how potassium reacts with water.
Floats on top of water moving rapidly spontaneously. Lots of heat is given off the K bursts into a lilac flame while on the water. Bubbles of gas are released and forms a colourless solution.
13 of 25
Describe how Iron reacts with steam.
Must be heated until it glows red before the steam can be passed over. will form a black solid.
14 of 25
Describe how Zinc reacts with steam
Glows as steams passes over a yellow powder which turns white once it has cooled
15 of 25
Describe how aluminium reacts with steam
Al foil will not react but small pieces will react when the oxide layer is taken off. Al powder will react from being heated to form a white powder.
16 of 25
Describe how magnesium reacts with steam
Produces a bright white light and a white powder that remains
17 of 25
What metals are extracted from their ores by electrolysis?
K, Na, Ca, Mg, Al.
18 of 25
What metals are extracted from their ores by a reduction with carbon or carbon monoxide?
Zn, Fe, Sn, Pb.
19 of 25
what metals are found uncombined in nature?
Cu, Ag, Au.
20 of 25
What is the test for hydrogen?
The squeaky pop test
21 of 25
The explanation for why metals have high melting and boiling points
Strong forces of attraction between the metal cations and delocalised electrons, which requires a lot of energy to break apart.
22 of 25
The explanations of why heat are good conductors of heat and electricity.
They have delocalised electrons which can move and carry charge.
23 of 25
The explanation for why metals are ductile and malleable?
The layers of metal cations can slide over each other without the metallic bonds breaking.
24 of 25
what is the general equation for a metal and steam?
Metal + Steam -> Metal Oxide + Hydrogen
