What are isotopes?
Elements with the same atomic number and different mass numbers
1 of 10
Why is an atom neutral?
It has an equal number of electrons and protons. The positive charges balance out the negative charges.
2 of 10
What is the nucleus of an atoms made up of
Protons and neutrons
3 of 10
What is the relative charge & mass of an electron, proton and neutron?
Electron: charge=-1 & mass=0.0005 (0) Proton: charge=+1 & mass=1 Neutron: charge=0 & mass=1
4 of 10
In what order are the elements in the periodic table arranged?
They're arranged in order of increasing atomic number
5 of 10
What is a stable electronic structure?
Atoms having an outer shell of 8 electrons
6 of 10
What is ionic bonding?
Positive and negative ions attract one another and bind together forming a new substance. This is called ionic bonding as atoms are made stable by transferring electrons.
7 of 10
What do metals do to get a stable electronic structure?
They loose electrons & if an atom looses electrons, a +ve ion is formed as there's fewer -vly charged electrons than the number of +vly charged protons in the nucleus.
8 of 10
What do non-metals do to get a stable electronic structure?
They gain electrons & if an atom gains electrons, a -ve ion is formed as there's more -vly charged electrons than the number of +vly charged protons in the nucleus.
9 of 10
What happens during ionic bonding?
The metal atom becomes a +ve ion and the non-metal atom becomes a -ve ion & they attract one another.
