Chemistry 2.1 to 2.4

?
What does the atomic number of an atom stand for?
Number of protons
1 of 8
What does the mass number of an atom stand for?
Total number of protons and neutrons
2 of 8
How do you find the number of neutrons of an atom?
You subtract the atomic number from the mass number
3 of 8
What is a compound?
When two or more elements are chemically bonded
4 of 8
What is meant by the term 'Isotope'?
Isotopes are different atomic forms of the same element, which have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons
5 of 8
What is meant by Ionic Bonding?
Ionic bonding is the transferring of electrons between elements to create ions
6 of 8
How does an ion have a negative/positive charge?
For an ion to have a negative charge it will have had to of gained one or more electrons from another atom. and for an ion to have a positive charge it will have had to lose one or more electrons to another atom.
7 of 8
How do we know whether the atom loses or gains an electron in an ionic bond?
If the atom belongs to either group 6 or group 7, with nearly full outer shells, they will gain electrons to have a full outer shell. However if they belong to either group 1 or group 2 they will lose electrons to have a full outer shell.
