ammonia gas (NH3)
colourless, pungent smell. Test: hold damp red litmus paper (or Universal Indicator paper) in gas. Indicator paper turns blue.
1 of 6
carbon dioxide (CO2)
colourless, odourless. Test: bubble gas through limewater (calcium hydroxide solution). Result: white precipitate of calcium carbonate formed (solution turns milky)
2 of 6
chlorine (Cl2) - this gas is poisonous so test with care and use a fume cupboard
pale green, choking smell. Test hold damp litmus paper (or Universal Indicator paper) in gas. Result: indicator paper is bleached white (blue litmus will turn red first)
3 of 6
sulfur dioxide (SO2) - this gas is harmful and can cause breathing difficulties
colourless, pungent acidic smell. Test: add to a solution of, or filter paper soaked in, potassium manganate (vii). Test: potassium manganate (vii) changes from purple to colourless
4 of 6
hydrogen (H2)
colourless, odourless. Test: hold a lighted splint in gas. Result: hydrogen burns with a squeaky "pop".
5 of 6
oxygen (O2)
colourless, odourless. Test: hold a "glowing" wooden splint in gas. Result: the splint re-lights.
