Test: add dilute hydrochloric acid to solid. Result: effervescence (fizzing), carbon dioxide produced (test with limewater)
1 of 7
chloride Cl- ions (in solution)
Test: acidify with dilute nitric acid then add aqueous silver nitrate. Result: white precipitate of silver chloride formed, soluble in ammonia solution
2 of 7
bromide Br- ions (in solution)
Test: acidify with dilute nitric acid then add aqueous silver nitrate. Result: cream precipitate of silver bromide formed. Only slightly soluble in ammonia solution.
3 of 7
iodide I- ions (in solution)
Test: acidify with dilute nitric acid then add aqueous silver nitrate. Result: yellow precipitate of silver iodide formed, insoluble in ammonia solution.
4 of 7
sulfate SO4 2- ions (in solution)
Test: acidify solution with dilute hydrochloric acid then add barium chloride solution OR acidify solution with dilute nitric acid then add barium nitrate solution. Result: white precipitate of barium sulfate formed.
5 of 7
sulfite SO3 2- ions (in solution)
Test: add dilute hydrochloric acid to solid, then add aqueous potassium manganate (vii) solution. Result: decolourises the purple potassium managanate (vii) solution
6 of 7
nitrate NO3 - ions (in solution)
Test: make solution alkaline with sodium hydroxide solution, then add aluminium foil (or Devarda's alloy) and warm carefully. Result: ammonia gas given off (test with moist red litmus paper).
