Test for gases; Carbon Dioxide
Turns limewater- calcium hydroxide- cloudy
3 of 5
Test for gases; Hydrogen
A lit splint at the open end of a test tube containing hydrogen causes a 'squeaky pop'.
4 of 5
Test for carbonates
Use a dropping pipette to add a couple of drops of dilute acid. Then connect the test tube to a test tube of limewater- calcium hydroxide. If carbonate ions are present, carbon dioxide will be released and it will turn the limewater cloudy.
