what is a chemical equation?
it shows the reactants (the substances you start with) and the products (the new substances you have made) in a reaction
1 of 7
what is a reactant?
the substances you start with
2 of 7
what is a product?
the new substance made
3 of 7
what happens to the atoms in a chemical reaction?
they get rearranged, we can compare the mass of reactants compared with the mass of products
4 of 7
what is a symbol equation?
(e.g. CaCO3 ---> CaO + CO2) this is an example of a symbol equation to show how much of each substance is involved in each reaction
5 of 7
why must a equation be balanced?
atoms cannot be created or destroyed in a reaction therefore there must be a equal amount of each atom on both sides of the equation
6 of 7
what is the law of conservation of mass?
the total mass of the product formed in a reaction is equal to the total mass of the reactants
