What trends are there in Physical properties? (3)
Atomic Radius, First Ionisation Energy, Melting points
1 of 10
Trend: Atomic radius ( + Explanation)
Increases upon descending the group, result of increasing electron shells
2 of 10
Trend: First Ionisation Energy ( + Explanation)
Decreases upon descending the group, atomic radius increases due to additional shells, increased sheilding leads to outermost electrons being pulled in less by the nucleus.
3 of 10
Trend: Melting Points ( + Explanation)
All high, but there are different structures, most are metallic bonding (sea of electrons model), this descreases down the group due to decreasing charge-to-size ratio (charge density). Mg is slightly lower because it has a different crystal structur

What are the trends in chemical properties?(4)
Reactions with water, Solubility of Hydroxides, Uses of Magnesium and Calcium Hydroxides, Solubility of Sulphates,
5 of 10
Reactions with water? (trends and products)
Reactivity increases upon descending the group. Reactions with water = M(OH)2. Reactions with steam = MO.
6 of 10
Solubility of Hydroxides?(trends and results)
Solubility increases when descending the group. Those that dissolve create alkaline solutions as they dissociate. M(OH)2 is a metal hydroxide.

Uses of Magnesium (Mg(OH)2) and Calcium hydroxides (Ca(OH))?
Mg(OH)2 accepts two H+ so acts as an antacid, also acts a laxative. Calcium hydroxide is used as an acidic soil neutraliser, so a wider range of crops can be grown.

Solubility of Sulphates? (trend + feature)
Solubility decreases down the group. As a result Barium Sulphate is insoluble and has a use as "Barium Meal".
9 of 10
Test for Sulphates using Barium?
Barium will displace any other group two metal and form an insoluble ppt. So Barium ions are added to a solution with nitric/hydrochloric acid and if a white ppt forms then a sulphate was present.
