Dichotomous question
A question where there are only two possible answers, apart from 'don't know', 'no preference' etc.

Pre-coded question
A question with more than two possible answers, apart from 'don't know', where the likely range of responses is listed on the questionnaire.

Enables the respondent to give as full an answer as he or she wishes.

Probing
The term used to describe follow-up questions that sometimes accompany open-ended questions.

Item pool
The collection of attitude statements from which the scale will be built.

Straightlining or straight line responding
Sometimes seen in responses to scale questions in self-completion surveys, notably in online surveys. It arises where respondents chooses responses in the same column on a page - indicates response fatigue and poor survey design.

Filter question
A question designed to send a set of respondents straight to questions specific to them.
