(Chapter 6) Infection and Response

?
What is meant by a communicable disease?
A disease that can be transmitted between organisms.
1 of 12
What are the four main types of disease? Give examples.
Viruses (measles), bacteria (salmonella), fungi (rose black spots) and protists (malaria(
2 of 12
How can different pathogens be spread?
Through the air, through dirty water, by direct physical contact, through contaminated food and also passed by another animal.
3 of 12
Why is it impossible to kill a virus?
Because thet aren't alive in the first place.
4 of 12
What are some examples of viral diseases in humans? Bacterial? Fungal? Protist?
Measles and HIV/AIDS. Salmonella and gonorrhoea. Athlete's foot. Malaria.
5 of 12
What is the first human line of defence against pathogens?
Skin, lysozymes in tear and saliva, stomach acids and hairs/cilia/
6 of 12
What is the second line of human defence against pathogens?
Phagocytes- These engulf pathogens as well as any dead/dying cells. When it comes into contact with a pathogen, it binds with it and absorbs it into a vacuole in its cytoplasm where enzymes are added. This is called phagocytosis.
7 of 12
What is the third (and final) line of human defence against pathogens?
Lymphocytes- Recognise pathogen and release antibdy. It remembers the antibody used so stops the pathogen much better in futue. Also, antitoxins.
8 of 12
What is a vaccine?
Amedicine containiong an antigen from a pathogeen that triggers a low level immune responcse so that subsequent infection is dealt with by the body's own immune system. It has a small amount of a dead pathogen so the body learns it.
9 of 12
At what rate are antibodies produced after a vaccination?
.
10 of 12
What are antibiotics?
A group of medicines which kill bacteria and fungi.
11 of 12
What are painkillers?
Drugs that relieve pain.
