What units are the amount of a chemical substance measured in
Moles
1 of 17
What is the key to working out the amount of moles in a substance
Finding the relative atomic masses of different atoms
2 of 17
What is the most accurate way to find the relative atomic masses of a substance
By using a mass spectrometer
3 of 17
What is one mole of a element equal to in terms of mass
It is equal to the relative atomic mass of that element in grams
4 of 17
What is the 'Amount of a substance'
It is a physical quantity
5 of 17
What is meant by the relative atomic mass
Ar is the averge mass of an element relative to 1/12 of the mass of an atom of the isotope carbon-12
6 of 17
What is meant by molar mass
It is the mass of one mole of a chemical - The unit is g mol^-1 (Always specify the symbol or formula
7 of 17
What is the meant by the term species
The term species is used to refer to atoms, molecules or ions
8 of 17
What is the value of avogardo's constant
6.02 x 10^23 mol^-1
9 of 17
What is meant by the term avogardo's constant
it is the number of atoms, molecules or ions in 1 mole of a substance which has the units mol^-1
10 of 17
What is an empirical formula
This shows the simplest whole number ratio of the atoms of different elements in a compound e.g. CH4 methane, CH3 ethane
11 of 17
What is meant by the percentage composition
It is the percentage by mass of each of te elements in a sample of a compound
12 of 17
What is meant by the term gas laws
This describes the behaviour of gases and are summarised by the ideal gas equation
13 of 17
What is meant by the term Ideal gases
Ideal gases are gases which obey the ideal gas equation
14 of 17
What is meant by the term SI units
SI units are the internationally agreed units for measurement in science
15 of 17
What is meant by pressure
It is defined by the force per unit area, the SI unit for pressure is the pascal (Pa) whaich is the pressure of one newton per square metre. Its often quoted as Kilopascals (kPa). Atmospheric pressure is measured in bar. 1 bar = 100000Pa = 100KPa
16 of 17
What is meant by the term volume
It is the amount of space taken by a sample. The SI unit of volume is the cubic metre (M^3). Volume can be measured in cubic decimetres (dm^3) or cubic centimetres (cm^3). 1 dm = 10cm, so, 1 dm^3 = 1000 cm^3, 1 m = 10 dm, so, 1m^3 = 10^3dm^3=10^6cm^3
