If we are taking more of something than it's being replaced what are we doing?
We are overcropping that resource.
1 of 9
What is abundance?
The abundance of a species is a measure of how many there are in an area.
2 of 9
What are three factors that affect distribution and abundance?
1. Characteristics of the environment. e.g- light availability, tide movement. 2. Characteristics of the organism. e.g- what conditions they are adapted to. 3. Interactions between organisms. e.g- availability of prey, competition.
3 of 9
What 4 factors determine population size?
Birth, death, immigration and emigration.
4 of 9
What is exponential growth?
Occurs mainly in organisms that can reproduce quickly. E.g- insects, bacteria.
5 of 9
What is intra-specific comptetion?
Competion between members of the same species for an environmental resource that is in limited supply.
6 of 9
What is carrying capacity?
It's when the birth and death rate equalise.
7 of 9
When trying to conserve a species, biologists must work out what?
Minimum viable population size.
8 of 9
What are 2 reasons why chemical control of pests is undesirable?
It is generally expensive and chemicals can build up in ecosystems.
