Charge = 0 Mass = 1
2 of 14
Charge and mass of an Electron?
Charge = -1 Mass = 1/1836
3 of 14
What is an Isotope?
Atoms of the same element with different number of neutrons and different masses.
4 of 14
What is a Cation?
Positive ion with a positive charge.
5 of 14
What is an Anion?
Negative ion with a negative charge.
6 of 14
Definition of Relative Isotopic Mass
Mass of an isotope relative to 1/12th of the mass of an atom of Carbon-12.
7 of 14
Definition of Relative Atomic Mass
Ar, is the weighted mean mass of and atom of an element relative to 1/12th of the mass of an atom of Carbon-12.
8 of 14
Process of Mass Spectrometer to determine Atomic Mass
Sample placed in spectrometer. Vaporized then ionized to form positive ions. Ions accelerated. Heavier ions are slower and harder to detect. Isotope is separated. Ions detected of mass spectrum as mass to charge ratio. Do calculation.
9 of 14
What do metals on the left do?
Lose electrons to form Cations (positive ions)
10 of 14
What do non-metals on the right do?
Gain electrons to form Anions (negative ions)
11 of 14
What is a binary compound?
Contains two elements only, name ends in ide.
12 of 14
How to write an equation?
Write out formula equation. Balance equation. Add state symbols.
13 of 14
How to write formula from Ions?
Overall charge is zero. Sum of positive charge = Sum of negative charge.
