How do plants control their responses?
Responses are controlled by hormones.
2 of 19
What is a hormone?
A hormone is a chemical messenger that is transported to cell that are capable of responding.
3 of 19
What is phototropism?
Phototropism is growth in response to light
4 of 19
What is Geotropism?
Geotropism is growth in response to gravity.
5 of 19
What is apical dominance?
Apical dominance is inhibition of lateral branches.
6 of 19
What is fruit ripening?
Fruit ripening is conversion of starches to sugars.
7 of 19
What is abcission?
Abcission is shedding of leaves and flowers
8 of 19
Where is auxin produced?
Auxin is produced in the meristem and diffuses through layers of cells.
9 of 19
What do gibberellins do?
Promote growth in an entire plant
10 of 19
What do cytokinins do?
Promote cell division and differentiation in the presence of auxin.
11 of 19
What is Abscisic Acid?
Abscisic Acid is an inhibitory hormone produced in chloroplasts.
12 of 19
What are physical stimuli that plants respond to?
Day/night length, gravity, temperature and touch.
13 of 19
What are chemical stimuli that plants respond to?
Water and carbon dioxide
14 of 19
How do leaves track the sun as it moves?
Leaves track the sun by changing turgor.
15 of 19
Are plant hormones slower acting than animal?
Yes, plants hormones are slower acting than animal.
16 of 19
What is phototropism a response to?
Phototropism is a response to blue light.
17 of 19
What is thigmotropism? Give an example?
Growth in response to contact with a surface. Climbing plants like peas.
