What are abiotic factors and give some examples?
An abiotic factor is a non-living thing that can affect an environment. Examples include soil type, rainfall, temperature and salinity.
2 of 18
What are biotic factors and give some examples?
A biotic factor is a living thing that can affect an environment. Such things are availability of mates or the impact of predators and parasites
3 of 18
What is a limiting factor?
An environmental requirement in short supply.
4 of 18
What is an adaptation?
An inherited characteristic that improves an organisms chances of survival and reproduction.
5 of 18
What are some abiotic factors found in water?
Ph, gases, temperature, light and salinity.
6 of 18
What do mangroves have to cope with?
Fluctuating salinity levels, lack of oxygen for their roots and an aquatic environment for their seed disposal.
7 of 18
What is torpor?
It's when animals allow their body temperature to drop and they become dormant for a period of time.
8 of 18
What triggers hibernation?
Scarcity of food/water and low environmental temperatures.
9 of 18
What is a hydrophyte?
A hydrophyte is a water loving plant.
10 of 18
What is the main problem for hydrophytes?
The main problem is lack of oxygen.
11 of 18
What are the 3 zones?
Subtidal zone, intertidal zone and spray zone
12 of 18
What are pneumatophores?
Aerial roots.
13 of 18
What is a xerophyte?
Plant that loves dryness.
14 of 18
What are some adaptations of xerophytes?
Thick waxy cuticles, sunken stomata and leaves that point away from the sun.
