What were the problems in Birmingham's CBD?

By 1980, many of the factories could not compete with cheaper goods from abroad and closed down. This had a negative effect on the local economy and the CBD. For example, the locals had less money to spend on the rundown Bullring Shopping Centre.

The Bullring was completely redeveloped and reopened in 2003. It now has more than 140 major shops including a flagship Selfridges store. A £400 million project has transformed Brindley Place into a smart, modern pedestrian zone.

There is a high demand for houses in the inner city. Improved CBDs mean that people want to live near them. Also, universities situated in the inner city result in lots of students wanting to live in the inner city too.

What is Urban Living?

The Urban Living Scheme in Lozells and Birchfield has tried to find ways to improve the quality of life for inner city residents. Old houses have been refurbished and replaced. Individual bedsit flats have now been converted into large family homes.

What are the reasons for ethnic segregation?

Ethnic segregation happens because immigrants want support from others; a familiar culture; specialist facilities; safety in numbers and employment factors.

How has housing been improved in Curitiba?

COHAB have introduced a housing policy that will provide 50,000 homes for the urban poor. Each housing plot comes with two trees and the promise of "an hour with an architect" to help plan each home. The "Green Exchange" means there is minimal waste.

How has China and in particular, Chongqing, been affected by the environmental cost of rapid urbanisation?

In 2008, 16 out of the 20 dirtiest cities were in China. In Beijing, the Chinese government had to remove 3 million cars from the road and close down factories during the Olympic Games.
