A process where an increasing proportion of the population lives in town and cities. And there is a reduction living in rural areas.

Push factors
Attract people to cities because of the hope of work and earning money, better schools, healthcare, environment

Pull factors
Encourage people to leave villages because of poverty, few jobs except in farming, poor health facilities, few schools, little entertainment.

Squatter settlements
Areas of cities (usually on the outskirts) that are built by people from any materials they can find on land that does not belong to them. AKA; favelas, shanty towns or slums..

Informal Sector
That part of the economy where jobs are created by people to try to get an income and which are not recognized in official figures.

Self help (ASH)
Sometimes known as assisted self-help, this is where local authorities help the squatter settlement residents to improve their homes by offering finance in the form of loans or grants and often installing water, sanitation etc

Occur where land is divided into individual plots and water, sanitation, electricity and basic track layout are supplied before any building by residents begin.

Companies that spread their operations around the world in attempt to reduce costs and create a global market eg. Coca Cola
