How did the 1918 Representation of People Act help Labour?
It increased the British electorate from 7 million to 21 million. All men over the age of 21 could vote and Land owning women over the age of 30 could also vote. 80% of the British electorate was now working class, a group that Labour favoured.

It did not have an immediate effect. Labour didn't win a majority until 1945. Labour didn't appeal to all working class people

What was the trade depression?
Britain was struggling with poverty and inflation in 1923 under Conservative rule. The price of coal had risen from 5s.3d to 16s in 1923.This affected many working class people in industrial jobs. Unemployment rose to 10% the highest on record.

Those working class citizens suffering with poverty would be seeking change as the Conservative Government was not helping.

Great Social Reform. The Nationalisation of industry, redistribution of wealth, and higher taxes.

Macdonald quoted; ‘the bargaining power of the British Foreign Secretary would depend not on military force, but on the reasonableness of the policy which he presented

Why was the Labour Foriegn policy attractive to Britain?
It called for Policy to be based on universal principals - democracy, human rights, underpinned by Nation interests. This was appealing to a War Weary Britain

French security and military control of Germany, Reperations.

Largely indecisive. There were conflicts within the Conservative party. international agreement on intractable issues like reparations, French security and military control of Germany was elusive.

What were the 1923 election results?
Labour 191, Liberal 158, Conservative 258. No one won a majority but Labour formed a Minority Government with Liberals. It was the last time the Liberals would have more than 100 seats and the first time Labour was in Government.

Loss of Liberal support, Zinoviev Letter, The Campbell Case.

What was the Zinoviev Letter?
A forged letter posted in The Daily Mail that called for revolution, in the hopes to disuade people from voting Labour or any other Left wing party.

What was the Campbell Case?
Campbell had published an article in socialist paper "Worker weekly" That was an incitement to mutiny. However, Labour dropped the charges, and MacDonald was accused of having communist sympathies.
