The financial crisis of the USA had devestating effects all over the world. Britian exports declined by 50%. Unemployment rose from 2.5 million and the need for financial assitance increased.

There was a deep divide in the party. Particularily between Philip Snowden and Economist Maynard Keynes.

Keynes suggested increasing government spending in public works. However Snowden refused knowing bankers in America had little patience for further spending.

The Labour Government split, and Macdonald began moving towards the parties resignition. However, King George ordered Macdonald to form a national government to show national unity in times of diifculty.

They viewed them as traitors and passed a motion to expell them from the Labour party.
