Changing Climate

?
What is the ice age?
An extended period of time when it is cold
1 of 30
What is Quaternary?
the last 2.6 million years of geological time
2 of 30
What is the glacial period?
a period of time lasting between 80,000- 100,000 years
3 of 30
What is the interglacial period?
a warm period of time lasting between 10,000- 15,000 years
4 of 30
What is the milankovitch cycle?
the small change in the earths orbit about once every 100,000 years
5 of 30
How do volcanoes effect the earths temperature?
By releasing ash into the atmosphere and blocking the sun and therefore cooling the earth
6 of 30
What are some natural causes of climate change?
Milankovitch cycles, sunspots, volcanic eruptions , asteroid collisions, ocean current changes
7 of 30
What are sunspots?
A burst of energy from the sun that sends more heat and energy
8 of 30
How do asteroid collisions affect the earths temp?
They can cause cooling because the material blocks out the sun
9 of 30
What was the little ice age?
a colder period in northern Europe starting in the 15th century and lasting to the mid 19th century
10 of 30
What were the impacts of the little ice age?
crops didn't grow well so people went hungry, winters were very cold and summers were short
11 of 30
Why didn't crops grow well during the little ice age?
the ground was frozen so nothing could be planted or grown in it
12 of 30
How was the little ice age thought to have been caused?
most likely to be natural changes. Not enough people or industry to cause it. Most likely fewer sunspots or volcanic ash in the atmosphere
13 of 30
What had evolved during the little ice age?
Mega fauna big animals typically weighed over 40kg such as woolly mammoth, giant beaver and sabre toothed tiger
14 of 30
What happened to the mega fauna after the little ice age?
they couldn't adapt to the climate becoming warmer and because of this became extinct. Also human hunting is thought to be a factor
15 of 30
What do most people agree is causing climate change?
Humans, through the production of various greenhouse gasses
16 of 30
What are the current levels of carbon dioxide and methane believed to be at?
carbon dioxide is thought to be at its highest for over 650,000 years and methane at its highest for at least 900,000
17 of 30
Why is more carbon dioxide produced as a country develops?
there is more industry, more energy is needed so more fossil fuels are burnt, transport increased so more vehicles consuming petrol/diesel

What is the UKs climate?
wet and mild
19 of 30
What factors impact the UKs climate?
latitude affects how much sun the UK gets and how strong it is during different seasons, North Atlantic current keeps UK warmer, air masses bring weather conditions with them, winds from the Atlantic ocean pick up moisture from the sea and bring rain
20 of 30
What are some of the possible changes to the UK climate?
average temp rise, less predictable rainfall and drier summers, changing seasons
21 of 30
How might the seasons change in the UK?
possibly longer summers and more extreme cold in winters
22 of 30
Why might the UK climate change?
North Atlantic current is likely to move and reduce sea temp and bring less rain, more air masses from the north bringing more storms and extreme cold
23 of 30
What are some environmental impacts of climate change in the UK?
sea level rise, more severe storms, longer summer droughts, changes to fishing industries, ecosystems could change, warmer temps could encourage diseases like malaria
24 of 30
What will a rising sea level mean for the UK?
loss of coastal land and increased coastal eroison
25 of 30
How would ecosystems change?
some plant and animal species move into new areas and new (invasive) species could emerge
26 of 30
What are some economic impacts of UK climate change?
damage to cities such as London would be very expensive and disruptive, farming could improve, tourism, flood protection
27 of 30
How could farmers possibly benefit from climate change?
they can grow different crops and enjoy longer growing seasons
28 of 30
How could UK climate change affect tourism?
if it is warmer in the UK people may spend more on holidays here rather than going abroad
29 of 30
How does climate change affect the Scottish skiing industry?
very badly, the temp is warmer so the snow melts so there is no where to ski and there isn't snow all ear round so ski businesses fail as well as the other businesses that rely on the industry as it will disappear if the snow does
