What was segregation?
The separation of different races, classes or ethnic groups. Racial segregation happened in America in public places (e.g schools, Churches, restaurants, hospitals) between black and white people.

What were the Jim Crow Laws?
The Jim Crow Laws which were introduced by the southern states in the 1880's legalized segregation between black and white people.

What was 'Poll Tax' and 'Literacy Tests'?
Poll Tax consisted of black people paying tax to vote, but most of them were too poor to do this. Literacy Tests were when the white people asked incredibly hard questions which the black people could not answer to prevent them from voting.

What was the Ku Klux Klan?
The KKK was active in the south and most of their members were WASPs. They were racist white Americans who believed in White Supremacy and used violence.

What is 'White Supremacy'?
White Supremacy was the belief that white people were superior and that they should politically, economically and socially rule non-white people.

What does WASPs mean?
WASPs stands for White Anglo-Saxon Protestants and most of these were in the racist group KKK. They believed that they more powerful than black people, immigrants, Jews, Roman Catholics, communists and socialists.

What was Lynching?
Lynching occured frequently by the KKK in the 1930's. They executed black people by hanging them on trees. To scare other blacks, they left them there. It was used if they thought a black person had committed a 'crime'.

What was the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People?
The NAACP was established in 1909 and they wanted freedom and equality for blacks. They protested and campaigned against lynching and challenged segregation and discrimination in the courts in the 30's and 40's mainly.
