Challenges To The Planet

?
What does Interglacial mean?
A time between cold times.
1 of 11
What are the factors affecting the world's climate?
Solar Output, Orbitual Geometry, Volcanic Activity & Tectonic Activity.
2 of 11
What is an 'External Factor'?
These are factors from space, e.g. Solar Output & Orbitual Geometry.
3 of 11
What is an 'Internal Factor'?
These are factors from the earth, e.g. The ocean, land or the atmosphere.
4 of 11
Orbitual Geometry/Milankovitch Cycle.
Every 120,000 years, the earth changed from an elliptical orbit to a circular orbit.
5 of 11
Solar Energy.
The sun has solar flares and sunspots, which are all areas of extreme energy. When more of these are pointing towards the earth, then more of the sun's energy is recieved and the climate potentially heats up. This works on an 11 year cycle.
6 of 11
Surface Reflection.
During colder periods, when there is a lot of snow and ice, more sunlight is reflected back into space making temperatures even colder. With less ice, less sunlight is reflected back and temperatures are warmer.
7 of 11
Change in Atmospheric Gas.
Greenhouse gasses such as Carbon Dioxide and Sulphur Dioxide keep heat within the earth's atmosphere by absorbing longwave radiation, preventing it escaping back into space. With more gases e.g, after a volcanic erruption, Temp. can increase.
8 of 11
Catastrophic Events.
Comets & Volcanic Erruptions cause huge quantities of material to go into the upper atmosphere which may cause climate change by blocking out the sun, so temperatures decrease.
9 of 11
Impact Of Volcanoes On Climate.
Laki Erruption, Iceland 1783: Poured out lava and poisonous gasses for 8 months. - Worlds largest lava flow covering 500km of Iceland.
10 of 11
Consequences of Laki:
For Iceland - Vegetation destroyed, animals killed. - 1/3 of Icelands population starved to death & Sun blocked out solar radiation. Globally - Reduced Temps, Europes harvest failed, increased civil unrest (Possible cause of French Revolution 1789)
