File Access
This is a method of locating and retrieving a record from a file.

Serial Access
This is where the records are read from the file, one at a time, starting from the beginning, in the order in which they are stored until the required record is found.

Sequential Access
This is where the records are read in key value order until the required record is found.
4 of 6
Indexed Access
This is an additional file that contains information about where records are stored. In the simpliest case, this file would contain the key values of the records and the address where the record is stored.

Direct Access
This is where a record can be located and retrieved immediately without having to access any other records.
