CER Definitions 2 (Rates of reaction + green)

HideShow resource information
Rate of reaction
The change in concentration of a reactant or product in a given time
1 of 10
Heterogenous catalysis
Catalysis of a reaction in which the catalyst and the reactants are in different states
2 of 10
Homogenous catalysis
Catalysis of a reaction in which the catalyst and the reactants are in the same state
3 of 10
Dynamic equilibrium
The equilibrium that exists in a closed system when the rate of the forward reaction is equal to the rate of the backward reaction
4 of 10
Le Chatalier's principle
States that when a system in dynamic equilibrium is subjected to a change, the position of equilibrium will shift to minimise the change
5 of 10
The greenhouse effect
The process by which the absorbance and subsequent emission of infra-red radiation by atmospheric gases warms the lower atmosphere and the planet's surface
6 of 10
GWP
Global Warming Potential; the ability of a trace gas to cause global warming
7 of 10
Troposphere
The lowest layer of the Earth's atmosphere, extending from the surface up to about 7km (from the poles) and 20km (from the tropics)
8 of 10
Stratosphere
The second layer of the Earth's atomsphere containing the ozone layer, about 10km to 50km above the Earth's surface
9 of 10
Adsorption
The process that occurs when a gas, liquid or solute is held to the surface of a solid or, more rarely, a liquid
