What is a Census?
The information collected on the questoinnaire which is used to help the government and local authorities plan the services and resources people need, and councils receive their funding based on these figures. This allows for the provision of service

Knowing how many people live in an area help local government plan who needs what in their local areas. A profile of the age and gender of a popualtion allows us to plan for school places, hospitals etc.

Health and Disability
Health Services and policies are planned around the data so that the necessary services are provided to those who need it

Housing
Housing needs can be much better planned if we know what the demand is now and likely to be in the future

Employment
By establishing how many people work in different occupations and industries, we can plan jobs and training policies

Ethnic Groups
Census information can be used to help allocate resources and monitor policies to ensure that all groups are treated equally

Transport
Identifying how and where people travel to work and study will help us understand the pressures on our transport systems and improve planning for roads and public transport

Why might the Census be inaccurate?
Lower-income areas have lower response rates for mail and door to door collection methods

Why might the Census be inaccurate?
People with lower education levels, lower literacy levels, and difficulty with the English language may have problems understanding the Census

Why might the Census be inaccurate?
Some communities may generally misunderstand the importance of Census participation and also many rural homes may be very remote or inaccessible

Why might the Census be inaccurate?
Many people/groups are suspicious of the government becuase they fear that Census responses may be used by immigration or police to deport them or their family members or may disqualify them for social welfare programs
